All his life, Ray felt as a social outcast, unable to belong to anything. To try and please his foster family, Ray studied hard and managed to get a scholarship to Columbia University in New York. Being the bright student he was, Ray started college a year earlier than most students.

Ray had to hold many jobs just to eat. One of these jobs was a lab assistant in the physics lab. The head scientist of the lab was an Egon Spengler. Egon noticed the bright young man and how eager he was about learning. He introduced Ray to Peter Venkman and ever since the three were good friends.

Out of the four men, Ray is the 'child' of the group. He always tries to see the brighter side of things. He's kind, gentle and always can see the good in people and situations. Everything is like a new experience for Ray and even when in mortal danger, he's always the first to yell, "Oh boy! This is great!"

::Winston: He'll get us all killed someday. But to him it'll be fun!::

Its almost as if he's looking at the world with new eyes and everything is a good experience for him. His emotions lies near the surface and he never hesitates to let them show. Even though he does have this childlike characteristic, don't underestimate him. Ray has a very quick mind and is prone to wild leaps of logic that often prove to be right on the mark.
